Japanese investors are closely watching the Singur imbroglio, for if Tata Motors pulls out of West Bengal, it will adversely affect them, said Fujio Samukawa, consul general of Japan in Kolkata.

“Japanese people are interested in the Nano car as it is a unique product,” he said.

Refusing to comment on the land acquisition process in Singur, he said: “In Japan, private companies buy land directly from the farmers. Companies negotiate with the landowners and it has nothing to do with the government.”
