August 18: Janhavi Deshpande breezed past Rikita Dalal 21-8, 21-8, 21-9 to make the women’s singles semifinals of the Andheri YMCA MDSTTA Open District Ranking table tennis tournament sponsored by Rotary Club at Andheri Complex, today.

Shalmali Mhatre, Shalmali Inamdar and Mangala Saraf joined her in the last-four stage.

Shalmali beat Uma Narvekar in another one-sided encounter, keeping her down to 5, 3 and 2 while Shalmali Inamdar brooked a little more resistance from Bhavna Suvarna while winning 21-16, 21-14, 21-11.

In the closest quarter-final encounter, Mangala Saraf was taken to four games before prevailing 21-18, 21-19, 21-23, 21-18.

In the girls section, Rujuta Rege advanced into the third round with an easy 21-5, 21-2 win over Sneha Vora.

Simultaneous chess
International Master Sharad Tilak, IWM Bhagyashree Thipsay and Fide-Master Avinash Awate will be playing siumltaneous chess at the Zandu Pharmaceutical Centeen on August 19. Interested players are expected to contact DB Pulekar on 5130943.
