CHANDIGARH, February 16: Among the eight polling stations centred at Nayagaon, under Panchayat Karora in Ropar Constituency, the polling was franchised by more voters than expected. Earlier this morning, the polling could not gain much momentum as many voters seemed undecided by then whom they should vote for.
In the population of 10,000 voters approximately, in Naya Gaon, 40 to 43 per cent of the voters cast their votes, says the presiding officers at different polling booths. Maximum voters cast their votes in the afternoon (after 2 p.m). Families could be seen coming in groups to the polling booths, they adds.
"Polling was done in a peaceful and organised manner," says a resident of the village. "There were rumours in the morning that disturbance might take place in the Government Middle School, one of the polling stations, but nothing of the sort happened thanks to the alert security." Far more males than females appeared to cast their votes. In fact at some places like the Government Middle School, the male votes were almost twice that of females, 281:144. More than 75 per cent of polling was reported from the Janata Colony. The colony, which comprises mainly lower class and slum population, participated to their best to elect their representative.
