Senior Congress leader and former Union minister, B. Janardhan Poojary, has been appointed president of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC). He will succeed Allum Veerabhadrappa, who voluntarily opted out of the position.In a press release issued in Delhi on Thursday, AICC general secretary in charge of Karnataka Vayalar Ravi said AICC president Sonia Gandhi had approved Poojary’s appointment. This is the second time Poojary is becoming the PCC chief. He held the post in 1987-88, but was replaced by Veerendra Patil.Poojary has been with Congress for a long time and his name was synonymous with ‘‘loan melas.’’ As Union Minister of State for Finance in the early ‘80s, he forced nationalised banks to lend crores of rupees for self-employment schemes. Later he became the AICC general secretary.
