The BJP took a cue from the Centre and heightened the pitch of its anti-Pakistan rhetoric.

The party pledged to stand behind the PM in the country’s ‘‘final war against terrorism’’ in its resolution adopted this evening at a meeting of officebearers, chaired by chief K. Jana Krishnamurthi.

The party left it to the PM to decide on the action to be taken against Pakistan. Krishnamurthi said: ‘‘How, where and what should be done (against Pakistan) is up to the Government. We will support whatever decision is taken. They have all the information and intelligence inputs on the latest developments and they are the best judge.’’

Advani reviews internal security

New Delhi: Prior to leaving for Srinagar, Union Home Minister L.K. Advani on Wednesday reviewed the ‘‘rear-area’’ security in the country and gave directions for propping up civil defence with the thrust being on safeguarding vital installations.

In a meeting with Advani which was attended by Home Secretary Kamal Pandey, the director general of civil defence and a group of North Block officials, it was also decided to step up the security drill in Delhi, HP and parts of western UP.

He said that the PM had emphasised India could not be eternally patient. Citing feedback from hundreds of people he met during his recent tours, Krishnamurthi said people felt India could not ‘‘go on suffering terrorism’’.

When asked if a war was the last option that would be resorted to after all diplomatic efforts were exhausted, Krishnamurthi said: ‘‘In the current situation, there is nothing like the last option. All options, including the military option, are open. I don’t exclude anything. The diplomatic option can precede, follow or coincide with it.’’

He said he did not believe the US was ‘‘exerting pressure on India’’ in the current standoff. ‘‘Nor would India yield to any pressure,’’ he quickly said.

The BJP resolution read: ‘‘The assassination of Mr (Abdul Gani) Lone yesterday with the deliberate intention of synchronising it with the visit of the Prime Minister shows the extent to which ISI-sponsored terrorists have gone to test the patience and might of India. Pakistan does not seem to understand and realise the depth of resentment and anger of the people of India against terrorism emanating from its soil.’’
