KINGSTON, MARCH 16: Brian Lara led West Indies to a ten-wicket triumph over Australia in the second Test today and was named captain for the rest of the four-Test series and the forthcoming World Cup.Resuming at 157 for eight on the fourth day, Australia made another 20 runs to avoid an innings defeat. But West Indies needed to score just three runs to win, which they hit off the first three balls of their second innings.Lara's role in charge had been in serious doubt following the 5-0 rout in South Africa and the 312-run thrashing by Australia in the opening Test last week.Windies hit an all-time low in the Port-of-Spain debacle when they were dismissed for 51, their lowest Test score. The West Indies selectors had put Lara on a two-match trial and a dejected Lara had said before the second Test: ``I need to make a big innings.'' He did just that, steering his troubled team from 34 for four in their first innings to a total of 431 with a brilliant and long overdue 213.From that base, the WestIndies bowlers launched a second innings assault on the Australian batting. Debutant off-spinner Nehemiah Perry led the way with a five-for-70 haul on his home Sabina Park turf.Man-of-the-match Lara said: ``I'm very happy and I think the guys have dedicated this victory to the bowlers. They toiled day in and day out in South Africa and the batters are thankful for their efforts.''Australia captain Steve Waugh reckoned his side's batting simply was not good enough. ``Basically, we have to get down to some hard work in the middle,'' he said.ScoreboardAustralia (1st innings): 256West Indies (1st innings): Sherwin Campbell b McGrath 12, Suruj Ragoonath lbw Gillespie 0, Lincoln Roberts c Warne b McGrath 0, Brian Lara c Healy b McGrath 213, Dave Joseph c Blewett b McGrath 14, Pedro Collins c Mark Waugh b MacGill 13, Jimmy Adams c Elliott b McGrath 94, Ridley Jacobs c Gillespie b Warne 25, Nehemiah Perry not out 15, Curtley Ambrose b MacGill 3, Courtney Walsh lbw MacGill 0.
