NEW YORK, November 17: Jamaica became the first Caribbean nation to make the field in 24 years and Chile advanced to the tournament for the first time since 1982.Iran will play a home and away series against Australia on November 22 and 29 for the final spot in the 32-nation tournament, to be played in France from June 10-July 12. The teams will be drawn into eight first-round groups during a ceremony on December 4 at Marseille.Jamaica's Reggae Boyz got the third and final spot in the north and central American and Caribbean region with a scoreless tie at home against Mexico. Mexico finished first in regional qualifying, one point ahead of the United States. The Americans beat El Salvador 4-2, their most goals in 31 World Cup matches since a 5-1 victory over Jamaica in August 13, 1988.Chile clinched South America's fourth and final qualifying spot and advanced to the tournament for the first time in 16 years with a 3-0 victory against visiting Bolivia.Thousands of people took to the streets to celebrate and police said one person was killed, run over by an automobile participating in a noisy motorcade in a southern Santiago. Police called the death a traffic accident.Peru beat visiting Paraguay 1-0 but needed for Chile to tie or lose. Chile and Peru both had 25 points, but Chile won out on goal differential, plus 14 to minus 1.Argentina finished first in South American qualifying, followed by Paraguay and Colombia. Brazil got an automatic berth as defending champion.Ecuador, which could have qualified with a victory if both Chile and Peru failed to win, lost 3-5 at Uruguay despite three goals by Ariel Graziani.
