NEW YORK, November 17: Jamaica became the first Caribbean nation to make the field in 24 years and Chile advanced to the tournament for the first time since 1982.Iran will play a home and away series against Australia on November 22 and 29 for the final spot in the 32-nation tournament, to be played in France from June 10-July 12. The teams will be drawn into eight first-round groups during a ceremony on December 4 at Marseille.Jamaica's Reggae Boyz got the third and final spot in the north and central American and Caribbean region with a scoreless tie at home against Mexico. Mexico finished first in regional qualifying, one point ahead of the United States. The Americans beat El Salvador 4-2, their most goals in 31 World Cup matches since a 5-1 victory over Jamaica in August 13, 1988.Chile clinched South America's fourth and final qualifying spot and advanced to the tournament for the first time in 16 years with a 3-0 victory against visiting Bolivia.Thousands of people took to the streets to celebrate and police said one person was killed, run over by an automobile participating in a noisy motorcade in a southern Santiago. Police called the death a traffic accident.Peru beat visiting Paraguay 1-0 but needed for Chile to tie or lose. Chile and Peru both had 25 points, but Chile won out on goal differential, plus 14 to minus 1.Argentina finished first in South American qualifying, followed by Paraguay and Colombia. Brazil got an automatic berth as defending champion.Ecuador, which could have qualified with a victory if both Chile and Peru failed to win, lost 3-5 at Uruguay despite three goals by Ariel Graziani. Ecuador and Uruguay finished with 21 points, with Ecuador in sixth place on goal difference. Bolivia was eighth and Venezuela last.At Johor Bahru, Malaysia, Masayuki scored after goalkeeper Ahmad Abedzadeh allowed a rebound of Tsuyoshi Kitazawa's shot 28 minutes into overtime. Japan, co-host of the 2002 World Cup along with South Korea, went ahead when Masashi Nakayama scored in the 39th minute.Khodadah Azizi tied the score 30 seconds into the second half and Ali Daei put Iran ahead in the 59th, but Shoji Jo tied the score with a header in the 75th minute.Saudi Arabia and South Korea already had qualified as the two group winners from Asia's final round.At Kingston, Jamaica needed only a tie against Mexico and got it.
