After months of stalemate in the investigations into the murder of NCP treasurer Ram Avtar Jaggi two years ago, a special CBI squad today arrested Amrik Singh Gill, a deputy superintendent in the state’s anti-corruption bureau.

Gill, previously head of investigations in the Jaggi murder, is the second police officer to be arrested. ‘‘The state police was informed about his arrest late last evening,’’ Raipur IGP D.M. Awasthi said.

Earlier, the CBI had arrested R.C. Trivedi, an inspector in the crime squad, also a key member of the team set up by the Ajit Jogi government under Gill. Both officers allegedly tried to shield the killers by tampering with evidence.

The team reportedly did not summon those actually involved in Jaggi’s murder. The CBI has already questioned a senior IPS officer twice and today, police inspector V.K. Pandey, who was station house officer at Modhapara, where the murder took place, was summoned for detailed questioning along with Gill.

Pandey was responsible for cancellation of the second FIR lodged by Jaggi’s son, naming former CM Ajit Jogi and his son Amit as accused in the murder. Only last week, Jaggi’s wife and son Satish met AICC general secretary Margaret Alva and sought her intervention in expediting investigations. Says Satish Jaggi: ‘‘It’s good that things have moved but justice still eludes the family.’’

Jaggi, a staunch Vidya Charan Shukla loyalist, was gunned down on June 4, 2003, when he was returning from Shukla’s house. Shukla had waged a decisive battle for Jogi’s ouster and Jaggi, says his family, became a political victim.

Although Shukla, alongwith BJP, then in opposition, had demanded a CBI probe into Jaggi’s murder, the demand was turned down.

On its return to power, however, the BJP first withdrew the case from the court for re-investigations and a little later, decided to transfer the case to the CBI.
