Suspended Congress MLA and former external affairs minister Natwar Singh’s son Jagat Singh formally joined the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) as state vice-president of the party at a function in Jaipur on Saturday.
Jagat said his father would join the BSP soon and was expected to announce his decision in the coming week in Delhi. Jagat was expelled from the Congress two years ago for his alleged involvement in the oil-for-food scam and anti-party activities, while his father was forced to quit the party in February.
Announcing his decision to join the BSP in Jaipur with senior party leader Dharmvir Ashok, Jagat said the move came after lengthy discussions between BSP supremo Mayawati and his father. “We realised the BSP was the only alternative to the INC and the BJP. My father will make an official announcement on his decision to join the party from Lucknow or Delhi in the next week,” Jagat said. He added that joining the BJP was never a possibility as they were ideologically opposed.
Jagat also brought the Alwar panchayat president, 20 panchayat members and around 150 sarpanches into the party’s fold. “Their willingness to join the party shows the faith they have in BSP. We will increase the party’s vote share in the coming Assembly elections. However, I may not contest the polls from Laxmangarh constituency. I will wait for Mayawatiji’s orders on whether I should contest or help in organising the election campaign,” Jagat said.
