Nishrin Hussain, daughter of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, on Sunday overcame fear, anger and pain to fulfil her mother’s wish and visit the Gulbarg home where her father was killed in riots six months ago.

Fighting back tears after visit to the Gulbarg Society apartments in Ahmedabad, Nishrin said: ‘‘The first thing I remembered on entering the house was my father’s vast collection of books. They were all over the house.’’

She said some of the household articles not damaged in the mob attack on February 28 had been retrieved. Her mother, Nishrin said, would now accompany her to the US. ‘‘My father started the construction of the house when I was three years old,’’ she said.

Nishrin, who is here as part of a Sadhbhavna Mission by NRIs, had earlier decided not to visit her Gulbarg house. The group, which has 13 people from eight US states, kickstarted its mission on Monday.

Group member Shrikumar Poddar from Michigan said their aim was to let the people of Gujarat know they had the support of NRIs from the US.

The delegates said $1 million has been collected so far, of which 80 per cent has been donated to relief agencies.

After a week, the team will visit Vadodara, Godhra and other riot-affected places in the state. They plan to to meet top officials in Gujarat and Delhi and call for free and fair polls.
