DECEMBER 12: Two Saurashtra lads - Padmanabh Jadeja and Nikhil Rathod - stole the thunder from Mumbai at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday. The fifth-wicket pair raised a 180-run foundation which saw Saurashtra overhaul the Mumbai first innings score of 347. In the event, Saurashtra collected five points while Mumbai had to be content with only three in their Vijay Merchant under-16 encounter which concluded today. While Jadeja crafted a fine 128 (256b, 390m, 17x4), Rathod was unlucky to fall short of the three-figure mark by four runs. Rathod's vigil at the crease lasted for nearly four hours during which he faced 209 balls and was inclusive of 16 boundaries.Resuming at the overnight score of 71-3, Saurashtra suffered an early reversal in the form of Haresh Mavla (9). But that was all Mumbai could manage as the next four hours saw Jadeja and Rathod ground their heels and thwart the opposition. However, when off-spinner Harshad Rawle claimed Rathod, Mumbai were in with a chance to log five points as Saurashtra were still 86 runs away from their mission. Three more wickets, including that of Jadeja, for the addition of 65 runs, heightened the excitement. But the ninth wicket pair of left-hander Shakti Zala (24 not out) and Rana Karawadra (5 not out) ensured Jadeja and Rathod's heroics didn't go waste by collecting the 21 runs needed to upstage Mumbai.ScoreboardMumbai (1st innings): 347Saurashtra (2nd innings; overnight 71-3): Kartik Goswami c Sunasra b Pande 30, Viabhav Rathod c Valthati b Nair 2, Mit Mandavia c Pande b Rawle 23, Padmanabh Jadeja b Pande 128, Haresh Mavla c Bagul b Valthati 9, Nikhil rathod c Valthati b Rawle 96, Ajay Lalcheta b Pande 14, Shakti Vala c&b Pande 3, Shakti Zala not out 24, Rana Karawadra not out 5; Extras: (lb12, w2) 14.
