The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council today passed a private member’s resolution on the Indus Water Treaty. The resolution, moved by Depinder Kaur of the National Conference (NC), demanded that the state government should ask the Centre to scrap the treaty with immediate effect.

The resolution was passed during the zero hour after a House discussion. Primary Health and Education Minister Qazi Mohammad Afzal said the issue is related to the Central government as the treaty was signed between India and Pakistan. He urged Kaur to withdraw the resolution which she refused.

When Chairman Abdul Rashid Dar, asked for a voice vote, majority of the members raised hands in favour of the resolution as the NC holds most of the seats in the Council.
