With its efforts to boost tourism in Kashmir, the J-K government is holding a maiden international marathon race in the rugged terrain of Ladakh.
Nearly 250 amateur marathon runners from Western Europe have confirmed their participation for the August 16 event. According to the state Labour Minister Rizgin Jora, about 350 Europeans are expected to participate in the world’s highest altitude marathon.
Tourism Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir said that the objective to hold the event was to promote tourism and create broader awareness of Ladakh and its people. He said many international media companies like TV Denmark and Geographic channel would promote the event and pave way for more tourist arrivals.
Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed would specially fly to Ladakh to present the awards to the winners while the chief executive of Ladakh Autonomous Development Council, Thupsan Chewang, would inaugurate the event, he added.
