Gujarat Chief Minister didn’t spare a solemn occasion as the installation of freedom fighter Shyamji Krishna Verma’s ashes at his residence to launch a tirade against the “Italian Congress”.

So much so, that Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani, who was also present, said A.B. Vajpayee at the Centre and Narendra Modi in Gujarat are making ‘‘sincere and honest’’ efforts to bring true swaraj in the country.

Modi had brought Verma’s ashes from Geneva, and taken in a Veeranjali Yatra across Gujarat, to be installed at the Vermas’ home in Mandvi. The Chief Minister said the Congress’ boycott of the Mumbai function to welcome Varma’s ashes was an insult to the freedom fighter.

‘‘There are two Congresses,’’ he said. ‘‘One which was led by Mahatma Gandhi, and the other, the present day Congress, is an Italian Congress. This Italian Congress has not only insulted Varma, but has also questioned the yatra on financial grounds.’’ About expenses on the Veeranjali Yatra, he said: ‘‘You know what the samadhi to Sanjay Gandhi cost? Here, we are only offering floral tributes.’’

Even the Swiss recognised Varma and preserved his ashes for over 70 years, but the Congress chose the path of boycott, he said. He then went on to describe how Varma provided scholarships to 1,000 youths to study in London.

The state government, he said, has decided to erect a national memorial to Varma in Mandvi, on the lines of the one to Swami Vivekananda in Kanyakumari. However, he said, he was not making a formal announcement as an Assembly session was round the corner. A proposal for the monument would soon be sent to the Centre, he said. Throughout his speech, Modi referred to the country as Hindustan, though Advani used the word Bharat.

He also ridiculed Congress chief ministers for promising to bring back the Bhavani sword of Chhatrapati Shivaji and the Kohinoor diamond and said the BJP would soon initiate efforts to bring the two heritage pieces back.

Modi, who gave example after example to highlight Verma’s greatness, left Advani with little to say but that Modi’s speech was ‘‘inspiring’’.

Advani, who earlier in the morning inaugurated a new airport building in Bhuj and announced it will be named after Shyamji Krishna Verma after approval of the Union Cabinet, said what the country today needs is Vitamin P (for patriotism).

Why’s NDA afraid of a woman, asks Sonia

Cong the right choice? Left just can’t decide

On the day BJP Kerala chief P.S. Sreedharan Pillai demanded that the CPM makes its stand clear on the issue of backing the Congress, Polit buro member Prakash Karat insisted that the party will maintain ‘‘equidistance’’ from both the Congress and the BJP. But in Asansol, Jyoti Basu offered ‘‘unequivocal support’’ to the Congress: ‘‘In constituencies where we won’t put up candidates, we will support those of the Congress, whether the party seeks our backing or not.” (ENS)

KOTA: Raising the level of attack against Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee to a new high, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi today accused him of ‘‘obfuscating’’ real issues and said the BJP-led government was ‘‘afraid of a single woman’’ as it cannot reply to questions raised by her.

‘‘Agar woh itni taakatwar sarkar hai to woh ek mahila se darti kyon hai, (if it is so powerful a government then why is it afraid of a woman),’’ Sonia said at a Congress rally here.

Charging Vajpayee of having failed to give a single reply to the questions raised by her in the Lok Sabha during the debate on the recent no-confidence motion, she said the motion was aimed at exposing and showing to the nation the flaws of the NDA Government… But Vajpayee responded only by skirting the questions with excuses.

Earlier Sonia dedicated the sixth unit of Kota super thermal power station to the people. The Rs 534-crore 195 MW unit has been completed in a record period of 24 months. Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and Energy Minister Ram Narayan Chaudhary were also present on the occasion. (PTI)
