MUMBAI, JUNE 15: The Income Tax (IT) department in Mumbai is scrutinising the IT returns filed by city-based cricketers, including that of a former captain’s wife, in the wake of the match fixing scandal rocking the sport.

The IT officials were investigating the income and assets of the cricketers as also that of their close relatives in a bid to find out whether there were any `benami’ transactions, sources pointed out.

The IT department was also having a re-look at certain documents, including the personal diary of a city builder which was recovered in a raid about three years ago, that contains vital information on betting so as to unravel the mystery behind the cricket scandal.

The documents point to the involvement of a cricketer who had given Rs 83 lakh in cash to the said builder as his contribution for a joint venture project, they said adding, the cricketer had in addition also issued two cheques of Rs 25 lakh each.
