Pakistan’s main Opposition Islamic alliance started an anti-government campaign on Sunday with a rally in Karachi, demanding President Pervez Musharraf quit his position as Army Chief.
‘‘Today, we are holding the first of four planned rallies to force Musharraf to quit as the Army chief,’’ said Qazi Hussain Ahmad, head of the United Action Forum, a coalition of six major Islamic parties. The other rallies are to be held in Lahore, Peshawar and Rawalpindi, where Musharraf lives.
‘‘We do not want a President in uniform,’’ said Maulana Fazal-ur Rehman, the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly and secretary general of the MMA. Musharraf should announce he was relinquishing the Army post by December 19, he said. ‘‘If not, he and his government will not be able to exist for long,’’ he said.
The coalition struck a deal with the President last year, giving him the power to dissolve Parliament. In return, Musharraf promised to quit his Army post before the end of this year. —Agencies
