Is Aragones going the Scolari way?

Spanish papers quote that national coach Luis Aragones is joining Turkish club Fenerbahce.

Turkish giants Fenerbahce are close to signing Spain’s national coach Luis Aragones to a two-year deal replacing Brazilian Zico, a Spanish newspaper said on Tuesday.

“The deal seems set and if it has not been made public until now, it is because Luis is leading the Spanish squad at Euro 2008,” the Marca newspaper said, without citing its sources.

Aragones, 69, has been the target of criticism in Spain after leaving out Real Madrid’s star striker Raul from the squad for Euro 2008.

But the critics were forced to eat their words after two convincing victories by Spain, 4-1 over Russia and 2-1 against Sweden.

A former Spanish international, Aragones coached several Spanish clubs before becoming the national coach in 2004. Fenerbahce last week suspended negotiations with Zico over his contract renewal.

According to press reports the stumbling block remains the Brazilian’s salary demand of 3.2 million euros (4.9 million dollars) a year for bringing the team to the Champions League quarter-finals.

His current salary is 1.9 million euros. Zico, 55, joined the club on a two-year contract in July 2006, leading them to the league and Turkish Supercup titles during their centenary year in 2007.
