The IRA is still recruiting and training new members in the use of guns and explosives in its campaign to oust Britain from the province, Northern Ireland’s ceasefire watchdog said on Tuesday.

In a hard-hitting report on the uneasy peace that reigns in Northern Ireland, the Independent Monitoring Commission (IMC) also said Protestant paramilitaries on the other side of the sectarian divide were also ‘‘active, violent and ruthless’’. The IMC, a four-man panel was set up in 2003 to rule on whether rival paramilitary groups are sticking to peace pledges. In its report it said the IRA was also still heavily engaged in organised crime, including smuggling of fuel and tobacco. —Reuters
