Rajnish Rai, an IPS officer who was accused of copying during his first year LLB exam was on Sunday found guilty by the Gujarat University (GU) Reforms Committee and was declared failed in all the subjects for the year 2007-08.

However, Rai, who appeared before the Reform Committee on Sunday, said he was not aware of the decision and was not told about the penalty even after a meeting that lasted more than half an hour. “I received the letter only yesterday. Today also I reiterated my demand and asked them to provide me with copies of evidence that they have against me, as directed by the Gujarat High Court. But I did not get anything,” said Rai, a 1992 batch IPS officer. “I don’t know about the conclusion of the meeting. It was adjourned after 30 minutes of discussion,” Rai added.

Announcing the verdict, a member of the GU Reform Committee J J Patel said, “We have examined 23 cases of cheating on Sunday including that of IPS officer Rajnish Rai… Based on the evidence and independent statements of individuals we found him guilty under GU rules and have awarded him penalty,” Patel said.
