Karachi, December 8: England were 79 for one in reply to Pakistan’s first innings total of 405 at the close on the second day of the third and final Test at the National Stadium today.
Earlier at tea England spinner Ashley Giles took four wickets and pacer Darren Gough three as Pakistan were bowled out for 405 in their first innings.
Giles dismissed centurion Yousuf Youhanna, Moin Khan and Shahid Afridi off 31 balls to put the brakes on Pakistan’s scoring spree, finishing with 4-94 to take his tally to 14 wickets in the series.
Gough finished with 3-82 and wrapped up Pakistan’s innings by bowling tail-enders Saqlain Mushtaq for 16 and Waqar Younis for 17.
The home side looked set for a massive total but floundered under England’s steady line and length, losing their last seven wickets for just 82 runs.
Restarting at 292-3, Pakistan added 31 quick runs before England responded through Giles.
The 27-year-old left-armer from Warwickshire took a low, one-handed return catch off his own bowling to send Youhanna back.
Youhanna made 117 during his 313-minute stay at the crease, hitting 14 fours and a six.
Two runs later Haq drove a Craig White outswinger and was well caught by a diving Trescothick for 142.
Haq’s innings lasted 361 minutes, with 22 boundaries. He and Youhanna added 259 runs for the fourth wicket.
Pakistani captain Moin Khan, all-rounder Afridi and Abdur Razzak tried to carry on the innings but fell to Giles and a resurgent English side, who are desperate to scratch their names in history.
No English side has won a Test in Pakistan since Ted Dexter’s 1962 side took a 1-0 series victory, while Pakistan have never lost in this bustling southern port city in 34 Tests.
Khan mistimed a shot and was caught by Graeme Hick for 10, Afridi tried to leave a ball that was pitched on middle stump and was bowled for 10, while Razzak edged one to slip for 21.
Giles bowled 19 overs on day two, taking 4-42.
