The Pakistan Cricket Board said Wednesday it will take a decision on the uncertain cricketing future of former captain Inzamam-ul-Haq within the next two to three days.

Reports in Pakistan speculate that Inzamam will retire from Test cricket after playing in the second Test against South Africa in Lahore next week. The 37-year-old Inzamam opted out of the first Test against South Africa without any explanation, but is likely to return for the second Test, starting October 8.

Inzamam, 37, retired from one-day internationals after Pakistan’s shock first round exit from the World Cup in the West Indies in March, but did not quit Test cricket. The veteran of 119 Tests needs a further 20 runs to break Javed Miandad’s Pakistan record of 8,832 Test runs.

Television channel Geo and Daily Jang newspaper reported Wednesday that the PCB has struck a deal with Inzamam and will pay Rs10 million ($152,000) to the former captain after he retires from Test cricket, but the PCB denied this. “The reports that PCB has carried out a deal with Inzamam by assuring him a guaranteed money of Rs10 million at his retirement is absolutely incorrect,” the cricket board said in a statement.

“PCB clearly states that all policy decision regarding Inzamam will be announced in next two to three days and the decision will be in larger interest of Pakistan.”
