Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul Haq became the seventh player to appear in 300 one-day internationals on Wednesday. The experienced batsman led his country in the third ODI against New Zealand, joining Wasim Akram as the only Pakistani to play in 300 ODIs.

‘‘It is a great feeling to be playing in my 300th match. The ambition is there to also score 10,000 runs,’’ Inzamam said.

The other players to have appeared in 300 matches are Akram (356), Mohammed Azharuddin (334), Steve Waugh (325), Sachin Tendulkar (321), Aravinda de Silva (308) and Sanath Jayasuriya (308).

Inzamam (9,331 runs) said he wanted to end the five-match series against New Zealand as the second highest scorer in ODIs behind Tendulkar. ‘‘I do have regrets now that in the past I missed out on some big scoring opportunities but I want to make up for lost time now,’’ he said.

Inzamam passed de Silva’s tally of 9,284 runs in the first match on Saturday to become the third-highest scorer in ODIs behind Tendulkar (12,685) and Azhar (9,378).

Inzamam returned to the team for the recent home series against Bangladesh after being dropped following poor performances in the World Cup in southern Africa earlier this year.
