Mumbai, April 05: Following the University of Mumbai’s decision to set up a committee to evaluate internal assessment in colleges, the Association of Non-Government Colleges today organised a seminar where resolutions were formulated to be forwarded to the varsity committee for consideration.

Internal assessment is applicable in the first and second year in all the streams. The exam pattern is divided into ten plus twenty plus seventy, and a student has to secure 20 per cent marks at every level, otherwise he/she is disqualified.

The seminar, which had 90 participants, was held at Bhavan’s College, Andheri, and was divided into three sessions, one on disqualification, one on teachers’ problems and the third on students’ problems.

One of the resolutions adopted said disqualification should be stopped, thus making it possible for a student to appear for the second term examination. According to another resolution, exemption from attendance for the term and examinations on varied grounds should be left to the judgement of the steering committee of the college. Also, the participants resolved that the student-teacher ratio should be more favourable (ideally 80:1), thus enabling teachers to guide a small number of students in a more effective way.

Projects/assignment reports can be returned to students after they have been assessed, but only after taking care that they will not be reused, another resolution made it clear. The participants also pressed for rationalisation of ATKT rules in favour of arts and science students and said internal assessment of at least 20 per cent of the total marks should be introduced in the third year.
