NEW DELHI, August 12: Monika Malik’s father has decided to go back to the United States along with his doctor son, as he believes that nothing will ever come out of the investigations. Malik told Express Newsline, “My daughter is dead. Each day, the media and the police point fingers at her character. Mediapersons keep repeating the same questions and I repeat the same answers.”

He said that he did not want to talk to the media as he did “not need to defend” himself: “If Rajiv’s parents are talking to the media it might be because the incident happened in their house. Obviously, they will defend themselves. For me, I have lost everything. Her ashes are now flowing in the Ganges.”

He had decided to go back to the US as “there is nothing left here. It is for the police to catch the culprit. We just want people to stop talking about the case. Each time we read reports in the newspapers we feel a fresh pang of pain within us.”

Meanwhile, Monika’s family disclosed that her cellphone was switched off after 1.30 am that night. Her mother, worried about her whereabouts, kept calling “throughout the night” but there was no response. Monika’s brother, who did not reveal his name, told Express Newsline : “The last time, Monica communicated with her mother was at 12:30 pm when she said that she would be back in half-an-hour to an hour’s time. Thereafter, her mother called her cellphone several times after regular intervals, but there was no response. The cellphone was obviously switched off.”

He said that Rajiv came to pick her up in his Maruti Esteem between 9 and 9:30 pm. He honked for Monika, who was already waiting for him. She was wearing black trousers which her brother had got from the US and a fawn T-shirt which was gifted to her by her sister. She was relaxed and wished a cheery goodbye to her mother. She left saying that she would be back by midnight.

According to her elder brother and sister, Monika was an intelligent girl who rose fast in whatever she took up. She was also looking forward to going to the US for a course in mass communication and she was awaiting her visa.

“She could not tolerate dumb people and was impatient with whoever was not of a certain level of intelligence,” added her sister. In fact, the family believes that she was extremely attached to her mother to whom she confided everything. If she had any plans to marry Rajiv she would have told her.

Rajiv was known to her mother as a colleague. He had come a few times to the house. They knew she used to visit Rajiv’s house and that she even consulted his mother, who runs a beauty parlour, about her skin problems.

After attempts to reach Monika over her cellphone throughout the night did not succeed, the family was extremely worried about her. In the morning, they were about to make calls to her friends and the office to know her whereabouts, when Rajiv’s sister called around 9 in the morning to say that Monica was at Safdarjung hospital. She did not say that she was dead. Her mother rushed to Safdarjung. They do not know who brought the body to the hospital.
