Germany’s hopes of adding to their three World Cup titles were dealt a heavy blow on Monday when injury ruled influential mid-fielder Sebastian Deisler out of this year’s finals just two days before the squad fly to Japan. “Sebastian Deisler will not be available to the German team for the World Cup,” the DFB said in a brief statement. Deisler injured his troublesome right knee after he clashed with Austrian striker Rolf Landerl in Saturday’s friendly match.

Camp official commits suicide

Tokyo: A local official working on training camp arrangements for Senegal team has committed suicide, a city official said today. Osamu Okamura, 52, was found dead on Saturday, said Kazuhisa Akiyama, an official at city hall in Fujieda, where the West African team is training. The city is about 160 kilometres southwest of Tokyo. Local police ruled the death a suicide but would not release details on how he killed himself. Akiyama also had no comment.

Weather may dampen fervour

Tokyo: Japan’s weather during the World Cup in June is likely to be normal for the time of year — and that means wet. Unseasonably damp May weather has led some football fans to hope that the worst of the rainy season might be over before the first match in Japan on June 1. But in a long-range forecast published on Monday, the Meteorological Agency said the weather would be unsettled over most of the country in June.
