The Indonesian embassy in Canberra was closed today after a suspicious package was sent to the compound in a security scare Austarlia’s Foreign Minister blamed on public anger over last week’s conviction of an Australian woman on drug smuggling charges.

The embassy has received threats and requested additional security ahead of the conviction of 27 year old Schapelle Corby who was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment last Friday for smuggling 4.1 kg of Cannabis into Bali airport in October last year.

‘‘Today, I’m aware that the Australian Federal Police and the fire brigade are investigating a possible suspicious package that was received this morning by the Indonesian embassy, ‘‘Foreign Minister Alexander Downer told the Parliament.

‘‘We condemn this sort of abuse and urge people concerned about Schapelle Corby to ensure they put their energy into supporting (her) legal defence team,’’ Downer said.
