Kuala lumpur, May 21: Indonesia emerged Thomas Cup champions once again as they defeated China 3-0 losing only one game in the bargain. This was a real authoritative victory for the Indonesians – their 12th Cup victory, and fourth win over China. For China this is will now be the 10th year that they go without winning the Cup, their last victory coming in 1990 over Malaysia in Tokyo.

Indonesian coach Christian Hadinata said after his squad received the Cup from the Malaysian king, “This time around we were the most balanced team. We had a tough time only against Denmark in our semi-finals. We were sure to win as we had already defeated China in our group match here 4-1 some days ago”.

The second match which was the first double finished in 22 minutes as top Indonesian pair of Tony Gunawan and Rexy Mainaky smashed thier way past Yu Jinhao and Chen Qiqui 15-9 15-2.

The Indonesians led 12-0 before the Chinese could get on the scoreboard. Tony Gunawan said: “We did expect a tougher match. But feel that they (Chinese) could not keep pace with our speed and played very defensive which suited us all the time”.

In came 19-year-old baby-faced Taufique Hidayat, already a two-time All-England runner up to seal China’s fate as he destroyed Ji Xinpeng 15-9 in the first game. In the second, Taufique stroked brilliantly catching Xinpeng on wrongfoot time and again with his deceptive flicks. Taufique, who is the youngest shuttler in this championships, led 13-9 when came a fightback from Xinpeng but the teenager never lost his composure, even when the score was 13-13. He lost a match point at 14-13 but after Xinpeng forced deuce at 14-14, Taufique wrapped it up 17-14.
