SINGAPORE, OCT 18: Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi lost to world No 1 Australian pair of Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde 2-6, 3-6 in the final of the Singapore Open tennis tournament here today.
The world No 3 Indian duo, who had defeated the Australians for the first time in their previous four meetings in the Shanghai Open final last Monday, could not repeat their performance today.
Paes and Bhupathi had entered the doubles final defeating Andrei Pavel (Romania) and Sargis Sargsian (Armenia) 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 in the semi-final yesterday.
Rios displaces Rafter: Marcelo Rios displaced Pat Rafter as No 2 in the world tennis rankings after taking the singles title at the $700,000 Heineken Open today 6-4, 6-2 over Australian Mark Woodforde.
Rios, who has already reached No 1 twice this year, will move in behind Pete Sampras on tomorrow’s computer list with five weeks to go until the end of the season.
Rios rolled to victory in 70 minutes over the 33-year-old veteran Woodforde, bidding to becomethe oldest man to ever win a title in the eight-year history of the ATP Tour.
Woodforde, who won the doubles title here, was simply overpowered by the 22-year-old Rios. The title was the seventh of 1998 for Chile’s Rios, who has won the most trophies this year of any player.
