An Indian taxi driver was attacked in Melbourne by a knife-wielding thief demanding money, latest in a series of such incidents involving cabbies from the South Asian country.

A 20-year-old man hired a cab and later put a knife to the driver’s throat and demanded he pull over, the police said.

The man stole a small amount of cash before running off leaving the 27-year-old Indian cabbie, who had been driving the cab for a month, too scared to drive cabs again, Detective Senior Constable Peter McGuffie said.

While not injured, he was been so disturbed by the attack that he has not returned to work and was now working as chef, police said.

“He fears for his safety and does not want to return to the job of driving taxis,” he said adding “The footage shows…the driver was quite scared but has reacted with a bit of common sense – the demands that were made of him, he complied with.”
