BANGALORE, NOV 23: Barely had the Indian cricket team taken off on its Australian tour, Board bigwig J Y Lele predicted: “We will be wiped out 0-3.”

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary says he is not happy with the composition of the Indian team for the tour. “No. I am not. Ajay Jadeja and Ajit Agarkar should not be in the side for Tests,” Lele told Rediff on the Net. “Ajay is a utility player. He is not a Test player,” he added.

On Agarkar, he said, “Forget about his performance. Can he promise that he will not break down again? Twice he has done to us now. He is so delicate. I wonder what he will do there,” he added.

Asked if India, which left today for Australia, will do well Down Under, the secretary said: “We will be wiped out 0-3. You watch, they will win all three games. India doesn’t stand a chance. The wickets there will not help the Indians at all. There is so much bounce. Besides Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Saurav Ganguly, there is no one else whocan bat there. And if one of them is injured, then we are finished. There is no depth in the middle order,” he added.

The injured Ajay Jadeja has been replaced by Hrishikesh Kanitkar, who was leading the India `A’ on a West Indies tour.

On former captain Azharuddin, the Board secretary said, “I would have taken Azhar in the side. Azharuddin is a great batsman.”

He felt that the ideal Indian team should have had Mohammed Kaif or Jacob Martin or Kanitkar. He would have preferred two more spinners and Sunil Joshi would have been one of them. “Why don’t we understand that spin is our forte? If we had taken more spinners to England we would have won the World Cup,” he said.

He expressed his anguish over players not being fit. Also the country lacks quality fast bowlers. Srinath was a complete failure in the World Cup. “There are 50 Srinaths out there in the country.”

On Rahul Dravid, he said, “I think Rahul is better than Sachin today. And I don’t think that it was a mistake that I dropped him.If I would have not dropped him then he would have never figured out why he was not getting the runs. He worked on his credit, after that the result is there for all to see,” he added.

To another question, he said opener S Ramesh will do well in Australia. “People keep talking about his bad technique but at least he is scoring runs. He is most consistent in Tests besides Rahul.”

Asked whether the matter between him and Indian coach Kapil Dev has been sorted out, Lele said: “There was no problem. He made a mistake and I proved my point. And you must have found out by now that president M C Muthaiah confirmed that he was not asked about Agarkar joining the team in Ahmedabad.”

“I said that Ajit should not be called to Ahmedabad and that he should be allowed to play his local game and prove his fitness. Is that wrong? They don’t want to play domestic games and want to go to Australia and other countries.”

When pointed out that Azharuddin was not given due credit like Australia did for Ian Healy, hesaid: “But what can we do if he (Azharuddin) is not ready to retire. He wants to suddenly play Ranji Trophy. If he retires then we will give him a very warm welcome. It is very sad over the way Azharuddin is being dealt with.
