While seeking friendly ties with China, India is keeping a close watch on enhanced Chinese naval activities in Myanmar, senior Indian navy officials said here today.

‘‘As far as Coco Island and Myanmar is concerned, we are vigilant and watching the developments going on there,’’ the flag officer commanding the Eastern Naval Command of the Indian Navy, Vice Admiral O.P. Bansal said on board INS Ranjit, a guided missile destroyer, now docked in Shanghai.

Sources say increased Chinese activities around Myanmar are a cause of concern to India, since naval facilities on Great Coco Island, the site of a major signals intelligence facility, are situated near Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Asked whether the issue came up during his interactions with the Chinese Navy, Bansal said: ‘‘No. Not this issue because that is at a much higher level. Our immediate aim is to have Navy-to-Navy contact and strengthening our relationship (with China),’’ he said.(PTI)
