NEW DELHI, SEPT 4: India and Britain today decided to set up a key Joint Working Group (JWG) to combat terrorism, drug trafficking and other issues relating to criminality. “The JWG will cover areas of mutual interest, including common concerns, to see that international terrorism and drug trafficking are curbed,” Home Minister L.K. Advani told reporters after over an hour long meeting with visiting British Home Secretary Jack Straw here.

Advani said modalities for the JWG would be worked out, for which a group of Home Ministry officials would visit London in October.

Straw said establishment of the JWG “is illustrative of the deepening and strengthening of relations between India and the UK, on which we place great importance”.

Asked if Britain had sought expeditious disposal of an appeal filed by its national Peter Bleach, convict in the Purulia armsdrop case, against the jail terms ordered by the Calcutta trial court, Straw said: “I raised the concern about Bleach with the minister (Advani) in the context which showed respect to the independence of Indian judiciary.” Straw said that Advani assured him that he would consider the concern.
