India will push for an extradition treaty with Bangladesh and seek cooperation on security and border management issues during the Home Secretary-level talks, which kicked off in Dhaka on Saturday.

Extradition treaty and mutual legal assistance on criminal matters to deal with security issues are among the proposals put forth by New Delhi, Home Secretary Madukar Gupta said before the parleys.

At the two-day talks, other issues to figure include security and border management. These issues are of prime concerns to India in the wake of evidence put forth by New Delhi on the presence of prominent north-eastern militant leaders in Bangladesh.

Asked about the extradition treaty, Gupta said “we will discuss it at the meeting and let you know the outcome tomorrow when the talks conclude.”

“We have a broad range of issues including security and border management and we will discuss all those in our meeting,” Gupta said.

Officials said they are expecting the two sides to come up with solutions on a number of outstanding matters concerning both the countries.

During the deliberations, New Delhi is likely to give Dhaka evidence on the involvement of Bangladesh-based outfits like HuJI and its nationals in terror acts, including Hyderabad blasts, and seek action against them.

Gupta’s Bangladeshi counterpart Abdul Karim said the meeting opened with a gesture of friendship and was expected to end with consensus on cooperation for border management, fighting cross-border crimes and trafficking, besides mutual cooperation among police forces of the two countries.

The Indian Home Secretary also met Bangladesh Army Chief General Moeen U Ahmad during a break between the talks and is also scheduled to meet Home Adviser of the interim Cabinet Maj Gen (Retd) M A Matin.

Gupta is leading a 14-member delegation, which also includes representatives of Foreign Ministry, frontier guards and police.
