A confident Indian women’s cricket team will take on Sri Lanka tomorrow in their opening encounter of the fifth women’s World Cup in Pretoria, South Africa.

Eight teams were competing for honours in the championship, the final of which would be held on April 10.

The tournament would be played on a league basis in the first round, with the top four teams proceeding to play in the semifinals.

India had earlier finished third behind New Zealand, the ultimate winners, and runners-up Australia in the last edition of the World Cup.

India had started preparations for the World Cup almost a year back when they played several limited-overs games against New Zealand and won the series 4-1. Later they won against the West Indies and Sri Lanka by identical 5-0 margins.
