India will articulate the views of developing countries in the G-8 Summit at Gleneagles and will oppose any attempt by the industrialised nations to create non-tariff barriers in the name of promoting clean energy and arresting climate change.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is leaving for the G-8 Summit in Gleneagles in Scotland tomorrow, will press for ‘‘common and differentiated response’’ to deal with climate change and sustainable development.
Singh will participate at the three-day summit from July 6 as a special invitee. According to Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran, New Delhi will demand that the protection of intellectual property rights (IPR) be relaxed for use of cleaner technology just like concessions being given for dealing with HIV/AIDS.
‘‘We are working with five developing countries on some kind of action plan on the issue relating to climate change, energy and sustainable development’’, said Saran on the eve of the Prime Minister’s visit.
Apart from India, the other five countries at Gleneagles will be China, Brazil, South Africa and Mexico. All these countries will meet ahead of their meeting with the G-8 leaders on July. The G-8 comprises US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Italy and Russia.
