India play China in opener

ST. ANDREWS, SCOTLAND, OCT 6: India have been drawn with fellow Asians China and the defending champions, South Africa and England in the group stage of the Alfred Dunhill Cup golf which begins at the St. Andrews on Thursday. On Wednesday, the pros and celebrties will engage themselves in a Pro-Celeb event and then the following day the main event gets under way.

India is being represented by Jeev Milkha Singh, who has distinguished himself on the European PGA, Vijay Kumar, the Mahindras Indian Golfer of the year for two years in a row, and Jyoti Randhawa, who in the last year has finally begun to fulfil the promise he showed early in his pro career.

India’s opening match is against China, while South Africa clash with England.

Scotland, who upset by India two years ago, face another tough team, Paraguay who humbled the Scots six years back. Colim Montgomerie, who lost to Gaurav Ghei in that sensational Indian win — Jeev shocked Andrew Coltart in another match — had six years ago lost to ParaguayanRaul Fretes in the other infamous loss the Scots would rather not remember.

This time Montgomerie, Open champion Paul Lawrie and Gary Orr are the fourth seeds and find themselves in a group which also includes fifth seeds Australia and Japan. But it is Paraguay whom they face first on Thursday.

Third seeds South Africa are seeking a record third successive victory in the tournament, will face sixth-seeded England. In the other Group 3 match India meet China.

Top seeds the United States, represented by Tom Lehman, Mark O’Meara and Payne Stewart, meet New Zealand, Italy and eighth seeds Sweden in Group 1.

Group 1: United States (1), Sweden (8), New Zealand, Italy.

Group 2: Scotland (4), Australia (5), Paraguay, Japan.

Group 3: South Africa (3), England (6), China, India.

Group 4: Spain (2), Ireland (7), France, Zimbabwe.

Winners of each round-robin group progress to semi-finals on Sunday morning. final takes place on Sunday afternoon.
