Indian girls missed more than they scored. They even missed a penalty stroke. Yet, the hosts emerged winners in the opening match of the Indira Gandhi Gold Cup at the National Stadium here today.
Saba Anjum came to the rescue of a rusty Indian side with a brace and it saved them the blushes against a fighting Malaysian side for a 2-1 verdict. The hosts started off with promise only to falter midway through the session. They were not functioning like a side without much coordination and it showed many a time when they fumbled in front of the goalmouth.
The Malaysian side, on the other hand, showed that the 3-3 draw they eked out against India in their last meeting in Singapore was no fluke. They not only showed good patience but also some very good defensive skills, thwarting the Indian girls’ penalty corner attempts.
Anjum had already provided them with the lead in the sixth minute but after playing well for the first 15 minutes, India went into shell. This allowed the Malaysian women a leeway and they showed their attacking intents. Malaysian captain Norfaraha Hashim levelled the score through a penalty corner in the the 22nd minute before Anjum sealed the fate of the visitors when India managed to convert their fourth penalty corner.
