It was supposed to be India’s big chance at staging a comeback in the Videocon Emerging Team Trophy tri-series, but it was not to be.

As expected, the heavy rain that lashed Colombo over the last couple of days continued long enough to wash out the India-Sri Lanka clash on Wednesday. The tournament moved from Premadasa Stadium to P Sarvanamuttu Stadium, but even there, not a ball could be bowled.

The no-result effectively has left India’s hopes of making the Sunday final in the hands of the hosts.

If Sri Lanka’s emerging stars beat Pakistan on tomorrow Indian hopes will still be alive. It would then leave them with a simple matter of beating Pakistan in a high-powered match-up on Friday.

All this is enough to give the Indian team reason to ‘‘keep their fingers crossed’’ through Wednesday night, informed a dejected Indian manager CR Vijayraghavan to The Indian Express.

The no-result gave India three points for a no-result encounter, but despite this India’s future stars are still at the bottom of the table with two losses from their three matches. Hosts Sri Lanka are on top with 15 points while Pakistan have six points from two matches.

India had lost both their first round matches to Sri Lanka and Pakistan over the weekend thanks to woeful batting displays.
