JAN 31: Defending champions India will be gunning for a hat-trick of titles at the SAARC Golf championship at the historic Delhi Golf Club from February 2 to 4.

India has won the SAARC Golf ever since its inception three years ago and with top rookies Rahil Gangjee, Ashok Kumar and Sheeraz Kalra on hand the hosts should steer away to victory in the six-nation championship.

The Indian Oil Corporation sponsored third edition of SAARC Golf will see Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and hosts India fight for the honours. Indian Olympic Association President Suresh Kalmadi, who also heads SAARC Championship Organising Committee, will make the inaugural tee-off on Friday.

The tournament will be played on a dual format with a stroke-play competition on the first two days followed by the final – a match-play affair between the top two teams.

India won the inaugural version of the tournament beating Sri Lanka in Bangalore in 1999 and then followed it up with a successful defence of their title over the same opponents in Dhaka last year.

Besides the match-play tournament, the SAARC Friendship Trophy, an individual stableford affair involving 120 amateurs, will also be played.
