Shaming Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary today, Youth Congress activists, demanding institution of a Chair on Gandhian Studies, ransacked the office of the Calicut University vice-chancellor, gheraoed him and forcibly planted a picture of the Mahatma on the office wall.
The incident took place in full view of policemen and other security personnel.
The police registered cases against 15 activists, including Kerala Youth Congress vice-president T Siddique after vice-chancellor Dr Syed Iqbal Hasnain complained that they not only ransacked his office but threatened to kill him. The V-C has written to the Governor and Chief Minister, seeking police protection for himself and his family.
The police foiled another bid by a separate group of activists to break open the gates of the university administrative block.
