Senior politburo member Prakash Karat is likely to be made new general secretary of the CPI(M) on the last day of the 18th party congress on Monday. Karat’s takeover will signal a new generation taking charge of the Left movement.

The outgoing politburo had virtually agreed to general secretary Harkishan Singh Surjeet’s proposal that he should be relieved of his job. It was decided that Surjeet and Jyoti Basu would be asked to remain in the politburo but wouldn’t be burdened with major jobs.
