The fate of Star News will be decided by the Group of Ministers (GoM) when it meets shortly. This was decided by an Inter-Ministerial Group (IMG) comprising secretaries of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, Department of Company Affairs and Law Ministry which met today to review Star News application submitted by its shell company Media Content and Communications Services.
The IMG will prepare a note for the GoM when it meets, citing reasons for and against granting uplinking rights to Star News.
In other words, the IMG will steer clear from taking a stand on the issue. Sources admitted uplinking rules could be tightened if it was felt lacking in any manner by the Group.
The I&B Ministry will seek to highlight what it feels is the core issue revolving around Star News: the application submitted by Star News conforms to the letter of the law on uplinking, but not in spirit.
‘‘The power to block special resolutions, editorial control lies with the minority stake holder Star, while on paper, it is the Indian shareholders who hold 74 per cent. Moreover, the advertising and infrastructure company that Media Content and Communications Services mentions for outsourcing are both 100 per cent Star subsidiaries,’’ officials said. The GoM comprises the Ministers of Finance, Law and I&B.
