MANILA, NOV 19: Imelda Marcos, widow of deposed Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos, has quietly slipped out of the country for a one-month trip that will take her to Europe and then to the United States for eye treatment, reports said on Friday.

The flamboyant widow left early Thursday aboard a Northwest Airlines flight bound for Japan, where she was due to take a connecting flight to Europe, reports said. Wearing a black dress and a colorful scarf, Marcos was accompanied by two unidentified men and a woman, reports said.

Marcos, earlier this week asked a special graft court permission to travel abroad for a month from Thursday to have her eyes treated for glaucoma by a doctor in Boston. In her petition, Marcos said she would return to the Philippines on December 18.

Marcos is facing charges of looting state coffers during her husband’s 20-year rule and cannot leave the country unless allowed by the court. The court last month gave her permission to leave but this was postponed after her sister died. She has repeatedly insisted she risks going blind if her glaucoma is not treated.

But reports on Friday said her itinerary would take her to France, where she is to attend a niece’s wedding, and then to Morocco, Portugal and Britain for private visits before heading to the United States.

A popular revolt toppled the Marcos regime in 1986, sending the dictator and his family into exile in Hawaii, where he died three years later. His family was later allowed to return home to face criminal and civil suits.
