Accusing BJP president L K Advani of playing votebank politics over the IMDT Act, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today said the NDA government and then Home Minister Advani, had done nothing about it when in power, but were now ‘‘doing a lot of talking.’’

‘‘For the last six years, Advani did not review the situation, but today he is saying all sorts of things,’’ said Gogoi at a press conference here.

He said it was the job of the Central government to stop infiltration but the NDA government had utterly failed in doing so. Now they were blaming the present government.

‘‘My government will protect genuine citizens,’’ Gogoi said, adding they had started preparing the new voter list. Asked if his government would be hurt because of the scrapping of the IMDT in the coming elections, Gogoi said, ‘‘I give protection to genuine Indian people. It won’t hurt me.’’

He said that the state had taken steps to prevent infiltration and 40,000 people had already been deported.

Gogoi said he had met the Prime Minister over the issue.
