The Indian Army added another tradition to its long list of customs on Wednesday. Army Chief General J J Singh, an alumnus of the Indian Military Academy (IMA) here, was given a farewell guard of honour by the cadets of the academy.
IMA Commandant Lt Gen P K Rampal said Gen Singh, who passed out from the academy in 1964, is the first army chief to be given a farewell at a formal ceremony by the academy. Gen J J Singh is retiring next month.
Lt Gen Rampal said from now on every Army Chief who has passed out from the academy would be given a farewell parade here.
“We wanted to honour the Army Chief at his own alma mater. He also got an opportunity to share his experiences with the cadets, the would-be officers of the Indian Army,” said Lt Col A K Chauhan, Public Relations Officer of the Indian Military Academy.
On Tuesday, the Army Chief inaugurated a photo exhibition showing rare images from the 75 years of the academy’s history. The photograph of the Army Chief as a cadet at the academy in 1963 was also displayed.
Earlier, Gen Singh called on Uttarakhand Governor Sudarshan Aggarwal and Chief Minister Maj Gen (retd) B C Khanduri.
The Chief Minister assured him that the state would raise four companies of an eco-task force besides giving land to develop housing colonies for serving as well as retired army officers.
