BSP president Mayawati is now taking her official role seriously and addresses the media on a regular basis, on every issue which matters to the party. Today, it was a distressed Mayawati who hit out at the manuvad (upper caste) media for misrepresenting facts while reporting on her appeal to the court yesterday.
‘‘I’ve not approached the court because I am afraid of being arrested as has been reported,’’ said Mayawati, ‘‘it is my constitutional and fundamental right to appeal against the false charges.’’
Yesterday, Mayawati’s lawyers had filed two writ petitions, seeking a stay on her arrest and quashing of the FIRs in the Taj Heritage Corridor and the disproportionate assets cases. The Lucknow Bench will pronounce its orders tomorrow. The bench had also reserved its orders on two other writ petitions filed by former UP Principal Secretary P.L. Punia and former Secretary (Environment) V.K. Gupta, seeking a stay on their arrest and quashing of the FIR in the same case.
As a customary finale to her meetings with the media, Mayawati once again kept the guessing game on about a tie-up with Congress. ‘‘There is still a month left for filing of nominations,’’ she said, and, added, ‘‘and politics could take any turn during this period.’’
