The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has pieced together the last hour of Rizwanur Rehman from his conversations with friends and the SMSes he sent. In the SMSes, Rizwanur pleaded with Ashok and Vimala Todi, his wife’s parents, to let him talk to Priyanka for one last time. But his pleas went unanswered. On September 21, Rizwanur left his aunt Munnibibi’s House at about 8.30 a.m. Between 9.15 and 10.27, there were frantic calls and SMSes from his mobile phone to friends and relatives. Here are the details of the telephone conversations and messages sent between 9.15 am and 10.28 a.m., according to CBI officials: • 9.15: a.m. A call from Rizwanur’s cellphone ( No. 9339957623) to Ashok Todi’s cellphone. The investigators found that the call lasted 1 minute and 47 seconds. Todi reportedly denied having any exchanges as the line was not clear and all he could hear was, “ Hello, Hello.” • 9.18 SMS to Ashok Todi: “Papa, hum jaan de rahen hain, Ekbar baat kara dijiye. (Papa, I am going to kill myself, allow me to talk her once.” ) • 9.24 SMS to Ashok Todi: “Das minute mein jaan de rahen hain. Ekbar baat kara dijiye. ( I am going to kill myself in ten minutes, let me talk to her once. “ ) • 9.30 SMS to Vimala Todi: “Panch minute mein marne ja rahen hain hum. Ekbar uski awaaz suna dijiye. ( I am going to die in five minutes. Let me hear her voice for once.”) • 9.42 SMS to Ashok Todi: “Papa hum jaan de rahen hain. Aap ke liye ek letter chhor ke ja rahen hain. Bhagwan sab ko thik rakhe. ( Papa, I am killing myself. I am leaving a letter for you. May God help you all.” )• 10 am A phone Call to Swapnil Sengupta, a colleague at Arena Multimedia, from a PCO at Phariapukur (near Shyambazar)—about 3 km from the spot where his body was found. Sources said Swapnil had called Rizwanur on his cellphone but he did not take it and called back from a PCO. Rizwanur, Swapnil told investigators, said that he was very depressed and he was not finding a way out. “I am not in a mood to come to work. I am lost. I do not know what to do,” he reportedly told Swapnil.• 10.05: Pompy Roy, a friend from Rizwanur’s St Xavier’s College days, received a call from the same Phariapukur PCO. Rizwanur told her that he was not being able to talk to Priyanka. Pompy asked him why he was not consulting lawyers. “Lawyer’s are charging thousands. I do not have the money. I do not know what to do,” Rizwanur reportedly told her.• 10.11: Sujato Bhardra, the chief of Association for Protection of Democratic Rights, got a call from Rizwanur. He reportedly told him: “I am collecting a few more documents that I will hand over to you. I will meet you later in the day near Lalbazar.” • 10.15: Madhavi Chanda, a Class XII student who used to take tuition from Rizwanur at the multimedia centre, got a call. Rizwanur, investigators found, told her: “Kal se hum tumko padane nahin aayenge. Tumhara saaman ( books) hum cousin ke pas rakha hai, cousin tum ko saman ghar pahuncha dega.” ( I will not come to give you tuition from tomorrow. My cousin will deliver the stuff at your home.” )• 10.27: Rizwanur called his lawyer Himangshu Dey, whom he had met the previous day. He was inside the courtroom and could not pick up the call. That was the last call. Minutes later, his body was found near railway tracks.
