A student of IIT Kanpur climbed up to a 100 feet high water tank at the South Eastern Railway’s carshed at Tikiapara in Howrah district on Thursday and refused to come down.

Ganesh Mohan Agarwal, a student of engineering, who suffers from bouts of depression, climbed the water tank and told the police and fire brigade who rushed to the spot that he would come down only if he could talk to his sister.

He also demanded his father’s mobile phone to talk to his sister, which was handed over to him by a Railway Protection Force man.

When his sister, Manashi turned up in the afternoon, Ganesh, however, neither spoke to her nor climbed down.

His father Bipul Mohan Agarwal told reporters that his son, though a good student and had stayed in the USA for a long time, suffered from depression.

He said that he and his wife Promila, who lived at Deshapriya Park in south Kolkata had put up with their daughter in Salt Lake three days ago. Ganesh was staying with his daughter.

“We cannot force him to come down as he might jump. We have to convince him to come down, but so far he has not,” said a fire brigade official.
