A solar-powered water heating system, solar streetlights, a sewage treatment plant and monitored usage of power. This new energy efficient system will be part of IIM’s new campus in Vastrapur. What’s more? There could be additional features like a laundromat and compact flourescent light fittings if the management permits.
The reason for ‘‘the best management’’ of power and water is one: If properly implemented, it will show up a saving of 40 per cent in the energy bill.
‘‘We wanted the new campus designed in such a way that it is energy and water efficient by default, and not fitted in later. The total cost for this step is less than five per cent of the cost of the total project, but this investment will pay return within three years,’’ said Bakul Dholakia, Director, IIM, Ahmedabad.
‘‘The idea of recycled water clicked there and we had it implemented for the housing colony in the new campus. With nearly 300 students using facilities constantly, we will have an idea if the plans will click everywhere. But the management is firm on one aspect, if something does not click, we will re-engineer it but never leave the plan,’’ said Dholakia. Architect Bimal Patel is positive about the move and feels that the money invested will be recovered soon since none of these projects cost more than Rs 2 lakh, which means the total cost for the seven hostels will come to Rs 14-15 lakh.
