Inspector General of Prisons U.D. Rajwade, who had recommended stringent action against erring jail officials, is himself under scrutiny for mass shifting of prison officials in blatant violation of the ban on transfers.Though Rajwade was not available for comment, a senior Maharashtra Home department official confirmed that information has been sought from him on the transfer orders issued by him in August. As part of the state’s austerity drive, Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh had directed all the heads of departments that after July 15, no official would be transferred. In case of an emergency, the officials would be shifted with the permission of the in-charge Cabinet member of the department. Simultaneously, the General Administration department had promulgated guidelines on the transfer policy. So far as the jail administration is concerned, it was found that more than 100 officials were shifted in blatant violation of the ban order in force.
